Harry Maguire believes Manchester United are “not far away” despite entering the international break with only five points from their opening five Premier League matches.
The defender spoke following United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage, where Matheus Cunha’s 89th-minute equaliser rescued a point for Michael Carrick’s side.
Maguire offered a more optimistic assessment of United’s position than much of the reaction surrounding the team after the game.
“We’re not far away.”
Manchester United said Maguire also believes the squad needs to “shut out the noise around the club” as it attempts to improve results.
United have won just one of their opening five Premier League matches and head into the international break with five points.
The mood among travelling supporters at Fulham also became increasingly frustrated, with Carrick’s decision to replace Kobbie Mainoo while United were trailing greeted by boos before supporters sang the midfielder’s name.
Gary Neville subsequently delivered a strongly critical assessment of United’s performance, while Matheus Cunha said Fulham had played with more energy than Carrick’s side.
Maguire’s comments therefore provide a markedly more positive assessment from inside the United dressing room as the club enters a three-week break before facing Tottenham at Old Trafford.
