Manchester United will have four first-team players remaining at the club during the international break after Karl Darlow became the latest player to withdraw from national-team duty.
United have confirmed that Darlow has pulled out of the Wales squad, joining Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo on the sidelines.
Benjamin Šeško has also withdrawn from Slovenia’s squad because of his recurring shin problem.
It means Michael Carrick will have four first-team players requiring treatment, assessment or monitoring during United’s three-week break from competitive football.
United have not disclosed the nature of Darlow’s injury.
The goalkeeper had been selected by Wales but will now remain with United while he recovers.
Rashford and Mainoo have also withdrawn from England duty.
Rashford has reportedly been managing a hip problem since the World Cup and experienced another issue during United’s draw with Fulham.
The nature of Mainoo’s injury has not been revealed.
United say Rashford, Mainoo and Darlow will now be assessed before being given individual recovery programmes during the international break.
Šeško’s situation is being handled separately.
The striker has withdrawn from Slovenia duty because of the shin problem that has troubled him previously.
United have confirmed that Šeško is due to undergo further tests before his recovery programme is finalised.
The international break gives Carrick and his medical staff a valuable window in which to manage all four players.
United are not due to play again until 10 October, when they face Tottenham in the Premier League.
Darlow’s absence is less significant to Carrick’s starting XI, with Senne Lammens currently ahead of him in the goalkeeping order.
The fitness of Rashford, Mainoo and Šeško could have a more direct impact on Carrick’s options when domestic football resumes.
For now, there are no confirmed return dates for the four players.
United will hope the three-week break allows the group to recover without missing further club matches.
