Manchester United reportedly rate Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler highly and could consider him if the club eventually decides to replace Michael Carrick.
Football Insider reports that Hürzeler would be near the top of United’s list of potential candidates if Carrick’s position deteriorates.
Former United chief scout Mick Brown says he has been told United are “very keen” on the Brighton manager.
Tottenham are also reported to admire Hürzeler.
There is currently no suggestion that United have approached Hürzeler, Brighton or the manager’s representatives.
Brown also said he would be surprised if United attempted to make a managerial change immediately.
That is consistent with separate reporting that Carrick retains the backing of the United hierarchy despite a difficult start to the Premier League season.
United have won only one of their opening five league matches, increasing scrutiny of Carrick following the strong results he produced after taking charge last season.
Hürzeler’s name nevertheless provides an indication of the type of coach United could consider if results eventually force the club to reassess Carrick’s position.
The Brighton manager has enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign.
His side sit third in the Premier League after five matches.
Brighton have also already beaten United this season.
Carrick’s side led 2-0 at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup before Brighton recovered to eliminate United from the competition.
Hürzeler’s position at Brighton is secure.
The club announced in May that he had signed a new contract running until June 2029.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom said at the time that Hürzeler’s playing identity and principles were aligned with the club’s long-term vision.
That lengthy contract would potentially complicate any attempt by another club to recruit him.
For now, there is no indication United have reached that stage.
Carrick remains manager and reports surrounding his immediate future suggest the club intends to give him further time.
The significance of the latest report is instead that United are claimed to have identified Hürzeler as a coach they rate highly should circumstances eventually change.
With Carrick under increasing pressure to improve United’s results after the international break, Hürzeler is now one of the first specific potential successors to be linked with the job.
