Michael Owen Calls Rashford United’s ‘Weak Link’ as Šeško Return Threatens His Place

Michael Owen believes Marcus Rashford could be the Manchester United attacker most vulnerable to losing his place when Benjamin Šeško returns.

The former United and England striker described Rashford as the “weak link in that attack as things stand” while discussing Michael Carrick’s attacking options on Premier League Productions.

Owen’s argument centres on how United could line up once Šeško is available again.

With Šeško operating through the middle, Matheus Cunha would be free to return to the left-hand side, potentially leaving Rashford without a place in Carrick’s preferred front line.

Rashford has started four of United’s opening five Premier League matches this season but is yet to register a league goal or assist.

“He’s probably been the quietest out of all the attacking players.”

“When Šeško comes back, Cunha can then go back onto that left-hand side. Rashford is probably the weak link in that attack as things stand.”

Owen also questioned Rashford’s demeanour, suggesting the forward does not currently look as though he is enjoying his football.

“He looks like he’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders.”

That assessment is Owen’s interpretation, but the selection issue he identifies could soon become a genuine decision for Carrick.

Rashford has returned to the United side under the current manager, while Cunha has been used away from the left-sided role in which he proved particularly effective last season.

Šeško’s return would give Carrick another option through the middle and potentially allow Cunha to move back outside.

That would leave United with a significant decision over Rashford’s role as competition for attacking places increases.
