Benjamin Šeško is reportedly undergoing an MRI scan as Manchester United assess the recurrence of the shin problem that disrupted the end of his first season at the club.
United have confirmed that the striker will undergo further tests this week after withdrawing from the Slovenia squad.
The club says an individual recovery programme will be decided once those assessments have been completed.
Slovenian newspaper Ekipa, relayed by Sport Witness, reports that Šeško was due to undergo an MRI scan in London.
The concern surrounds the fact that the problem is affecting the same area that caused Šeško to miss the end of the 2025/26 season.
The injury also disrupted his pre-season preparations.
Šeško experienced further pain following United’s defeat to Brighton and subsequently missed the draw with Fulham.
He has now withdrawn from international duty with Slovenia to remain in England for further assessment.
Slovenian reporting has raised concerns about the recurring nature of the pain and the possibility of persistent shin problems becoming more difficult to manage.
There is currently no diagnosis from Manchester United that Šeško has a chronic injury.
The club remains at the testing stage and has not provided a timetable for his return.
That distinction is important while United wait for the results of his latest assessments.
The recurrence is nevertheless a concern for Michael Carrick because Šeško is United’s primary natural centre-forward.
United made a major investment in the Slovenian striker and currently have limited specialist No.9 depth behind him.
The international break provides additional recovery time without Šeško necessarily missing further club matches.
United do not return to Premier League action until their meeting with Tottenham on 10 October.
Whether Šeško will be available for that game will depend on the results of his tests and the recovery programme subsequently put in place.
For now, United have confirmed further examinations rather than a new diagnosis.
The fact those tests concern a recurrence of the shin problem that already cost Šeško significant playing time makes their outcome particularly important.
