On This Day in 1888: The First League Match in Manchester United History

Manchester United’s league story began 138 years ago today with seven goals, around 3,000 spectators and a club that was still known as Newton Heath LYR.

On 22 September 1888, Newton Heath played the first league match in the club’s history, beating Darwen 4-3.

Jack Doughty scored twice for Newton Heath, with Roger Doughty and a player recorded as Gale also finding the net.

It was the beginning of competitive league football for a club that would not become Manchester United for almost another 14 years.

Newton Heath had been formed by workers from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and was still establishing itself within English football when organised league competition began to emerge.

The Football League was founded in 1888, but Newton Heath was not among its 12 original members.

Manchester United’s official history records that the club did not believe it was strong enough to join the new national competition.

Instead, Newton Heath entered The Combination, another league established that year involving clubs from the north of England and the Midlands.

Their first fixture came against Darwen on 22 September.

Newton Heath won 4-3 in front of an estimated crowd of 3,000, giving the club a winning start to its league history.

The competition itself would not last.

The Combination suffered organisational and financial problems and collapsed in April 1889 before its inaugural season could be completed.

Newton Heath had the strongest playing record in the competition when it folded.

The club moved into the Football Alliance for the following season, where it continued its progression towards the highest level of English football.

Newton Heath finally entered the Football League First Division in 1892.

Ten years later, in 1902, the club was renamed Manchester United.

That makes the victory over Darwen a particularly significant moment in United’s early history.

There was no Old Trafford, no Manchester United name and no Football League membership.

There were railway workers, a crowd of around 3,000 and a 4-3 victory in a competition that would disappear within months.

But on 22 September 1888, the league history of the club that became Manchester United had begun.
